Why Is the “i” in DiSC® Lowercase?

One question we hear often is: Why does DiSC® have a small “i”?

Before we answer, it’s important to understand that no single company or publisher owns DISC theory. Psychologist William Moulton Marston developed the original framework in the 1920s to help explain human behavior. However, Marston never created a DISC assessment himself.

As a result, many DISC-based assessments have emerged over time—each with its own interpretation and branding. Some of the most well-known include Everything DiSC®, DiSC® Classic, Extended DISC®, Personal Profile System®, Take Flight with DISC®, and even Tony Robbins’ DISC Test.

Now, back to the question: Why does our version of DiSC® use a lowercase “i”?

Those familiar with DiSC® know that each letter represents a behavioral style:

What Does DiSC® Stand For?

Everything DiSC® is an acronym representing four primary behavioral styles:

Dominance

Direct, decisive, and results-oriented. People with a “D” style tend to be confident, independent, and motivated by challenges and achievement.

Influence

Outgoing, enthusiastic, and people-focused.  Individuals with an “i” style enjoy social interaction, collaboration, and energizing others.

Steadiness

Supportive, dependable, and cooperative.  Those with an “S” style value stability, consistency, and harmonious relationships.

Conscientiousness

Analytical, detail-oriented, and precise. People with a “C” style prioritize accuracy, quality, and logical thinking.

So, does the lowercase “i” imply that the Influence style is somehow less important than the others? Absolutely not.

The truth is, there’s no hidden research or secret meaning behind the small “i.” It’s simply a stylistic choice—one that sets Everything DiSC® apart visually and reflects its unique identity. No certification or advanced training is required to understand it, and no deeper mystery lies beneath.

It’s just one of the many ways DiSC® keeps things interesting.
